Coronavirus: How to Dispel Fear and Resist Viral Infection (Free Heart-to-Heart Talk, Guided Imagery, & More)

This is a very troubling time for each of us as individuals, for our families, our nation and our world as a whole. Remember, you are not in this alone, we are in it together.

At times like this it is also well to remember Weiji, the Chinese word and character for “crisis,” which is said to be made up of two separate characters, Wei 危, meaning Danger, and Ji 机 meaning opportunity. Success comes when we see the danger, confront it, and find the opportunity that is always hidden within the crisis.

For me, it is an opportunity to share with you some of the very powerful tools I have developed over the last 50 years of working on a very intimate level with people confronting all sorts of major life problems: from catastrophic loss to serious infection, from childhood trauma to metastatic cancer, and everything in between.

As the world shuts down to stop the spread of this infectious disease and people are more isolated, you have the opportunity to learn some very important skills; learn to dispel fear, build resilience, and strengthen your body’s ability to heal and fight off infection from the comfort (and privacy) of your own home.

Virtual Town Hall Meeting

In early March, as we were beginning to see the pandemic emerging, our community got together for our first Virtual Town Hall Meeting. Our purpose was twofold:

  1. To inform the community at-large about what is likely to happen in the near future coming down the pike and
  2. To offer some guidance about why we should begin to isolate ourselves to enhance our ability to protect ourselves and others from the virus.

My presentation was rerecorded and I want to offer it to you now. You can listen to the podcast (top of this page), or watch the video below (re-recorded and re-titled Calm COVID Fear, Anxiety, Stress: Strengthen Immune System)

If you’d like to watch the original virtual town hall meeting you may do so here.

The Power of Forgiveness – A Conversation with Frederic Luskin, PhD

The Power of Forgiveness – A Conversation with Frederic Luskin, PhD

forgivenessFrederic Luskin, PhD has become world famous for his work in a most unusual subject – forgiveness. This  quality is sorely needed in this world of polarization, conflict, and violence.
I first met Dr. Luskin when he approached me at the end of a class I was teaching at Stanford University, while he was in graduate school. In this conversation we will trace his pathway to his current position. He is now the Director of the Stanford University Forgiveness Projects and an Associate Professor at the Institute of Transpersonal Psychology.

In his work in health promotion, he started to research the effect that forgiveness had on physical and emotional well-being as well as the reduction of the risk of cardiovascular disease. His research showed that learning to forgive helps people hurt less, experience less anger, feel less stress and suffer less depression. As people learn to forgive they become more hopeful, optimistic and compassionate, and they report significantly fewer symptoms of stress such as backache, muscle tension, dizziness, headaches and upset stomachs.

In this conversation you will get to meet him up close and personal as he and Dr. Miller share their perspectives on forgiveness and healing at the personal and family level as well as at the global level.

About Frederic Luskin, PhD:

Dr. Luskin is the author of the best seller Forgive for Good – A Proven Prescription for Health and Happiness , Stress Free for Good and Forgive for Love. His work has been featured in Time magazine, O magazine, Ladies Home Journal, U.S. News and World Reports, Prevention, the New York Times, Los Angeles Times, the Wall Street Journal and many other publications. Learn more about Dr. Luskin and his work at learningtoforgive.com

In the Forgive for Good workshop and class series Dr. Frederic Luskin presents the forgiveness training methodology that has been validated through six successful research studies conducted through the Stanford Forgiveness Projects.

Dr. Luskin’s work combines lecture with a hands-on approach to the ancient tradition of forgiveness.  Participants explore forgiveness with the goal of reducing hurt and helplessness, letting go of anger and increasing confidence and hope as they learn how to release unwanted hurts and grudges. His presentations explore the HEAL process of forgiveness that, when learned, can lead to enhanced well-being through self-care. In class practice may include guided imagery, journal writing and discussion all presented in a safe and nurturing environment. Dr. Luskin holds a Ph.D. in Counseling and Health Psychology from Stanford University.

Dr. Luskin continues to serve as Director of the Stanford Forgiveness Projects, an ongoing series of workshops and research projects that investigate the effectiveness of his forgiveness methods on a variety of populations. The forgiveness project has successfully explored forgiveness therapy with people who suffered from the violence in Northern Ireland, Sierra Leone as well as the attacks on the World Trade Center on 9/11. In addition his work has been successfully applied and researched in corporate, medical, legal and religious settings. He currently serves as a Senior Consultant in Health Promotion at Stanford University and is a Professor at the Institute of Transpersonal Psychology. He presents lectures, workshops, seminars and trainings on the importance, health benefits and training of forgiveness, stress management and emotional competence throughout the United States. He offers presentations and classes that range from one hour to ongoing weekly trainings.

Healing Cancer: A Conversation with Maggie Creighton [Free Podcast]

Healing Cancer: A Conversation with Maggie Creighton [Free Podcast]

Image of Maggie Creighton As part of our new series on “Healing Cancer,” Dr. Miller will interview Maggie Creighton, a near legend in cancer self-care. Now, you may not recognize that name right off, but if you have heard of support groups for cancer patients, you are aware of some of her contributions.

Back in the 1970s, Dr. Miller was hard at work developing and teaching his holistic approaches to human health care and healing in the then-emerging field of mind-body medicine. At the same time, back in Dallas, Texas, the extraordinary Carl and Stephanie Simonton were using similar techniques, such as meditation, imagery, and cognitive restructuring.

Although Dr. Miller’s work and teachings explored the power of these mind tools across the entire range of human physical, mental, and emotional illnesses, Carl and Stephanie had narrowed their focus, applying these tools to the single, very important illness we call Cancer. Soon they were joined by Maggie and Jim Creighton, who could also see that by changing the way people looked at their cancer – by changing the mental images people held of what it was that was harming the health and balance of their bodies, they could change the outcome of their illness.

By teaching people tools for affecting how frightened or empowered they felt, what their expectations were, and even how they really felt about death, they saw not only the qualities of people’s lives improving, but also their illnesses.

And the impacts were huge. Sure, this is no big news story now, many years later; we have so many studies demonstrating the value of essentially all of the techniques we were using. But back then it was. Together they produced the self-healing blockbuster, Getting Well Again.

Not long afterward, Maggie and Jim then moved north to the San Francisco Bay area and contacted me. Together we opened the world’s second patient-oriented cancer support and education center. In addition we developed the first training programs, providing hands-on healing experiences for interns, who then spread our ideas throughout the country. Now it is rare indeed to find a hospital or health center that did not provide for cancer patients to meet in support and education groups. Before that, there were none!

Our center remained open, teaching our approaches, for 20 years, closing when there were more than 50 other centers in the San Francisco Peninsula alone. Lately, however, Maggie has come back to town and agreed to share with us some of the thrills and spills of creating a seismic shift in how we understand and treat cancer. Moreover, as you will learn, there were some special approaches and perspectives that were central to our work that the System has not yet learned to incorporate. If you, or someone you know is dealing with the challenge of cancer, you really should listen to this wise woman as she shares her personal experiences helping people with cancer get well again – and enjoy listening to these two old friends and co-conspirators reconnect.

Journey within

Come to your senses, and notice to what degree you are seeing, hearing, feeling and thinking about things in the external world.

As I count, relax and allow your senses to release any hold on the exterior, allow your awareness to come within.

Find a place in your heart and mind in which you feel stable, calm, peaceful, and loving. Use whatever spiritual, psychological, energetic, and physical tools or technique to help you accomplish this. Experience yourself being visited by those you love and have loved, and those who love you and have loved you. Be aware of what a gift love is. Feel it kindling warmth in your heart.

• Imagine as clearly and lovingly as you can, your connections to the rest of humanity, to the world of nature and the land, and to whatever spiritual forces and images of sacredness are meaningful to you. Feel those connections enhance your presence by enabling you to be part of a larger wholeness, one graced with compassion, love and an intelligent, wise awareness.
• Hold your sense of yourself within that enhanced presence and feel its energy go out to your immediate environment, connecting in loving ways with the specific world around you.

Imagine you are overflowing with this energy, that it radiates from you like a beautiful golden light, spreading out to all around you. Feel yourself respecting and honoring the light of those around you. And if you wish, imagine it spreads out from you and from your kindred spirits and loved ones, that it flows out to the community, and even planetwide, drawing together in peaceful collaboration, people who have been split apart by differences of race, politics, ethnicity, religion, geography.

Guided Meditation on Love imageAs you feel and see them, hold them in the grace of a loving, peaceful spirit, and imagine they discover peaceful ways to communicate with each other. And if there’s a specific area of conflict you wish to direct this energy towards, visualize that conflict dissolving into peace and agape – true love.

Now, as you gradually return your senses and awareness to the world around you, imagine that your very being radiates light, like a lighthouse, a beacon of stability, peace, calm, forgiveness, love, and compassion. Imagine waves of light and love spreading out and joining with the waves of other, similar, lighthouses – other people working to express peace, compassion and love in their lives. And as these waves connect, they are weaving a web of light that is spreading all around, empowering all of us, everywhere.
