Physician Heal Thyself – How We Can Help Medicine Get Over Its Own Illness: A Conversation With Rachel Remen, MD [Free Podcast]

Physician Heal Thyself – How We Can Help Medicine Get Over Its Own Illness: A Conversation With Rachel Remen, MD [Free Podcast]

Rachel-Naomi-Remen-Headshot-226x300Today’s conversation features best-selling author, physician, and thought leader Rachel Remen M.D., whose work is changing doctors and medical schools throughout the world.

“I first met Rachel in the early 1970s, when she visited Esalen Institute to experience the work we were doing to create a new kind of medicine–one that was holistic and that focused on self-healing and human potential,” reminisces Dr. Miller.

In this conversation, you will hear how her “mind was blown,” and about her transformation from a typically rigid, emotionally closed, chief of a department at Stanford University Hospital to founder of “The Healer’s Art Curriculum.” This is a course that has enabled many thousands of physicians and other health professionals to transform their lives and deepen their sense of calling and service. It has been featured in US News & World Report in 2002 and 2005 and is presently taught in 60 medical schools here and 9 medical schools abroad.

You will find out why Dr. Remen says that “the footprints of the future are in the present,” and about how there is a hidden curriculum in modern medical education–one which gradually disconnects young doctors from their life purpose. You will hear how this leads to emotional repression, isolation, and burnout, on the part of the health professional, and ultimately, substandard care of patients and clients.

Listen, and discover more about the importance of being able to meet loss with presence, create real relationship between human beings (because, as Dr. Remen says, “medicine is an act of love”), and move beyond the “isolation of rank” to discover the “unity of service.” You will hear touching stories about physicians as they awakened from their slumber to discover the truth about healing and human relationship.

The Value of Having a Physician Who Cares: Dr. Saputo [Free Podcast]

The Value of Having a Physician Who Cares: Dr. Saputo [Free Podcast]

Many people enter the field of medicine and become physicians because of the enhanced social standing and the money that can be made, but some physicians enter the field because they love people and really want to bring healing to them. Len Saputo is the latter kind of physician. In this conversation you will learn about his journey, and what he has learned in his 30+ years of patient-centered practice.

A graduate of Duke University Medical School and board certified in medicine, he did everything he could for his patients at the John Muir Medical Center in the San Francisco Bay area, but for 25 years was desperately unhappy – he realized that he was only treating the symptoms of people’s illness and not creating the kind of health and happiness he had dreamed of.

It was then that his awakening took place and for the past 15 years, he has become a leader in the health/medicine movement, founding the Health/Medicine Forum, a non-profit educational foundation, and the Health Medicine Center, And Integrative Medicine Center located in Walnut Creek, California. In this very stimulating interview, you will hear his story, what changed his mind, and the healing tools he learned to bring into his practice.

Dr. Saputo sees illness as being primarily an opportunity to learn. You’ll learn how Dr. Saputo treats pain as a message leading to the discovery of higher purpose, how he sees his primary purpose as care and support, and how he treats the people he sees as friends rather than as “patients”.

You’ll hear how his wife’s illness awakened him to another level of practicing medicine and how important it was, he discovered, to understand that totality of his patients and how it led to what he calls his practice of “lifestyle medicine.” And you will learn how to provide these principles to your life.

He’ll talk about his newest book, the 2010 Nautilus Gold Award Book of the Year in health and healing, “Return to Healing: Radical Healthcare Reform and the Future of Medicine.” He’ll share with us the level of dishonesty there is in medical research, the corruption in medical organizations, the greed of the pharmaceutical companies, and his other discoveries about why it is that we continue to have a healthcare system that is not at all focused on creating or preserving health. This promises to be a great interview – don’t miss it.

Mind, Medicine, Miracles: A Conversation With Dr. Bernie Siegel [Free Podcast]

Mind, Medicine, Miracles: A Conversation With Dr. Bernie Siegel [Free Podcast]

We are happy to present one of the true giants in the field of patient-centered medicine, self-healing, Dr. Bernie Siegel. Bernie, the author of numerous bestsellers including the groundbreaking 1986 book, Love Medicine and Miracles, will explore some of his personal history, and what attracted him to the practice of Mind-Body Medicine.

Bernie, a top ranked student, graduating with honors, Phi Beta Kappa, as well as Alpha Omega Alpha (the Medical Students’ Honor Society), Dr. Siegel was a professor of medicine and a staff surgeon, a clinical professor of surgery at Yale, and was a real non-believer until a surprising event occurred in the mid seventies that would cause him to redirect his life.

Bernie will discuss the miracles he has seen – things that happen that we don’t understand. When a person heals his cancer, that’s no longer a miracle to Bernie – he has learned that when your body knows that you love your life, it heals itself. There’s a good reason. He says that strokes, suicide, and myocardial infarctions happen on Monday.

We will explore the remarkable ability of the body to heal itself – something that now has been well-documented by medical studies, and how living a life of purpose and Love can sustain our health and our life. After all, as Bernie says, “If we don’t love our lives, our body sees death as the solution.” Probably not the solution we’re hoping for though.

We’ll discuss some of the current studies as well as some of Bernie’s anecdotes – like the study that indicates that people above 50 years old whose parents said, “I love you,” have less than half of the number of major illnesses of those whose parents never said it.

Bernie will also share with us the rules for living he received from his mother and how they have affected his life and the lives of millions more. We’ll talk about the power of story – and how the only thing truer than the truth is a story, how to create the authentic life you’re here to live – not merely accepting the one that’s given to you, along with all of the warmth and humor we’ve come to expect from Bernie.

For many, Bernie needs no introduction; he has touched many lives all over our planet. In 1978 he began talking about patient empowerment and the choice to live fully and die in peace. As a physician, who has cared for and counseled innumerable people whose mortality has been threatened by an illness, Bernie embraces a philosophy of living and dying that stands at the forefront of the medical ethics and spiritual issues our society grapples with today. He continues to assist in the breaking of new ground in the field of healing and personally struggling to live the message of kindness and love. His web site is www.BernieSiegelMD.com.

What is ‘Wellness’?

What is ‘Wellness’?

Question:  What is ‘Wellness’?

Answer:  In our culture, we commonly think of ourselves as being “sick” or “healthy.” Generally, we define “sick” as having some sort of signs or symptoms of a disease (pain, swelling, fever, loss of function). We then tend to define health as simply being the absence of these signs and symptoms.

The concept of “wellness” recognizes that this is an inadequate way of looking at things. Wellness looks at the positive dimensions’ a person moving toward wellness is gaining strength, reserve capacity, feels joy in life. Wellness indicates not only the presence of health but also the ability to withstand the stresses that might otherwise lead to illness.

Learn the secret to global healing as passed down through  the ages, and how it has been hidden by rulers to keep themselves in power.  Gandhi said it more succinctly—“Think globally, act locally.” Your most powerful ally is the part of your adversary that knows what is right, what is good, what is Love. Here is the rationale for the wise use of imagination, and how it can create global change.
